Hiro hosts multiple production-hardened API services at scale, including the Stacks Blockchain API, the Ordinals API, and the Token Metadata API. Anyone can request a free API key directly within the Hiro Platform for up to 500 RPM regardless of the origin IP address.
We’ve introduced API keys for two primary reasons. First, we care about strong traffic attribution because that attribution helps us understand who our customers are and how they use our products. That in turn helps us build better products and experiences for you.
Second, API keys help us reduce unauthenticated traffic, which has the effect of reducing bots, denial of service attacks, and other non-productive traffic.
Please note: you can still access Hiro’s APIs without an API key if your rate limits fall under 50 RPM. More details are available in Hiro's rate limit policy.
Update Your API Keys
If you are using an API key that was generated by Hiro between June 2023 to January 2024, you’ll need to request a new key via the Hiro Platform. API keys generated before January 31st, 2024 will be deprecated and go out of service by March 1, 2024.
How to Generate an API Key in the Hiro Platform
Requesting an API key from the Hiro Platform is easy. All you have to do is:
- Log into the Hiro Platform.
- Click “API Keys” from the nav bar.
- Cllick “Generate API Key.”
- Name your key with a description of what it’s for.
- Congratulate yourself on creating your first key.
It’s that easy. Once you have your first key, you can manage your API keys from the same page, whether deleting old keys or creating new ones.

Need a Higher Rate Limit?
As your apps and users grow, the default API rate limits may not work for your applications, especially those that are seeing exponential growth. This is a great problem to have, and Hiro is here to help. If your app needs more than 500 RPM, please contact us.
